καὶ τὰ ὕψη τῶν ὀρέων αὐτοῦ εἰσιν·

The Lord is God, the mighty God,
the great king over all the gods.
He holds in his hands the depths of the earth
and the highest mountains as well.
He made the sea, it belongs to him,
the dry land, too, for it was formed by his hands.
A great God is the Lord, - 4
over the gods like a king.
God cradles the depths of the earth,
holds fast the mountain peaks.
God shaped the ocean and owns it,
formed the earth by hand.

Hodie, si vocem ejus audieritis, - 4

probaverunt et viderunt opera mea.
Today, listen to the voice of the Lord:
Do not grow stubborn, as your fathers did
in the wilderness,
when at Meriba and Massah
they challenged me and provoked me,
Although they had seen all of my works.

3. ps 33 ---1 - hymn
NJBC: certain rituals require “new” things, hence a new song; horse used primarily for warfare
Grail: Joyful song to the Creator: national hymn of thanksgiving. Perhaps from fear of emotionalism, clamorous joy seems to be suspect in religion. And yet God gives us the power to shout no less than to whisper. One feels that the Hebrew at least appreciated this. After all, the cosmos is God’s, and the nations on this planet, and the chosen people, and most of all those who revere God. Because God’s strength is infinite, the width of its range does not hinder the depth of its penetration. Indeed individual people feel all the more secure when they know that all creation can be arranged effortlessly for their ultimate happiness. It would be unnatural if such a faith did not produce a joy that expresses itself humbly and yet triumphantly.
Through the Word all things were made. (Jn 1,3)
3. The loyal heart / must praise the Lord.

[2] God has raised up for us a mighty Savior, / as was promised through the words of the holy prophets.

NJBC: each line begins with “how long?”; eyes that are enlightened denote life and vitality
Grail: Prayer of someone in anxiety. The friends of God are able to take liberties, it seems; indeed, they can be peremptory to the point of rudeness. One may suppose that they see less danger in presumption than in despair, and no doubt they are right. Moreover there is an undertone in this psalm that we hear elsewhere: that the defeat of God’s friends is a reflection on God, and with such pious cunning, we may hope, God is content. In fact, the death and resurrection of Christ who bore our sins is God’s admission that the triumph of sin would have affronted God’s own honor. And so we pray to God to safeguard God’s own honor in ourselves who seem to be the custodians of it, and yet only from God have the strength to guard it. This was not the psalm that Jesus began on the cross, but it might equally well have been. Unlike God’s enemies, ours are inside us; we crucify ourselves; but God will allow us to transpose this psalm into our own minor key.
May the God of hope fill you with every joy. (Rom 15,13)

3 - Ps 14 ---3 - individual lament
NJBC: the fool ignores the sovereignty of God; in Rom 3:10 Paul refers to this verse in his argument that all humans are sinners; the Lord bringing people back (last verse) may be a reference to the exile.
Grail: The fools. The "fool" in the Bible is not an ignoramus; nor is he a theoretical atheist or agnostic, a phenomenon apparently unknown to the Old Testament writers living in a polytheistic world. He is one who has his values all wrong and is encouraged by past experience to behave as if God would never take action. The world, mourns the psalmist, is full of men like this. But their time will come: God will save his people from them whether they are traitors to Israel or enemies from outside. We for our part should never count ourselves exempt from Scriptural denunciations. How often, for example, have we thought "I thank God that I am not as this Pharisee?" No, we are "foolish" too: the traitor inside us establishes his own convenient hierarchy of values. In this psalm, as in so many others, we pray God to destroy what is worst in our own selves.
Where sin has abounded, grace has abounded yet more. (Rom 5,20)

Grail: Gratitude and appeal: an alphabetical psalm. If God can handle the stars God has no difficulty with the human enemies of the psalmist. The Israelites never doubted this but sometimes we suspect they think God too patient altogether. “Lord, are we to order fire down from heaven to burn them up?” This is the reaction of earlier days to the enemies of God; but Jesus rebukes James and John for it (Lk 9:54). Nevertheless we have to admire the confidence in the power and vigilance of God that inspires these prayers--the impatience is only the impatience of a child sure of its parent’s strength. We must wait; we may die waiting; God seems to take no notice; in ourselves and in the world around us truth and goodness always seem to be at a disadvantage; the roll of the dice is against them. But God has the last throw and faith stands by the table watching.
Blessed are the poor; the kingdom of heaven is theirs. (Lk 6,20)

Grail: Truth in a world of lies. The “truth” of God is not so much a light to the mind as a sure guide along the uncertain way of life: “Your commands are a light to my feet.” Similarly, the falsehood of which the psalmist complains is human unreliability rather than the human tendency to lie. Hollow boasting can persuade the less thoughtful that a quagmire is solid ground, and the psalmists frequently denounce it; they find solidity only in God. From God there are no high sounding promises without fulfilment; Israel’s past proves it and her future will confirm it. The psalm seems to be a liturgy; a lament is answered by a divine promise of help pronounced by the priest; God will arise and save; the people reply with a profession of trust.

Evening Prayer

NJBC: king’s welfare is also that of the nation
Grail: Prayer for a king before battle. We cannot be expected to work up enthusiasm for some dead king’s campaign. "Send him victorious" for only one, and his crown was made of thorns. If we do not accept this shift of key, the psalm is unsingable for us. This is as it should be. The word of God must always be effective but sometimes it has done its work already in one quarter and must turn to face another situation. This is not always possible (for example, the detailed instructions for the Tabernacle in the Book of Exodus are of no further use to us), but it is possible here because we are still a monarchy, and the king is Christ.
My kingdom does not belong to this world. (Jn 18:36)

Grail: After victory. Another royal psalm requiring the same transposition as its predecessor. But now the victory is won and we think of the ascended Christ in his immortal and glorified body. But the war is not over yet: the spoils have to be safely gathered in. Christ has not retired to enjoy his triumph. He sits at the right hand of God, but God is everywhere; and so Christ is still Emmanuel, still God with us, much more with us because the restrictions of space and time have been taken from his body. This indeed is what the Ascension means: not a going but a more powerful coming, not a withdrawal but an active presence. For all this, our psalm is a Te Deum.

Grail: We do not always find it possible to connect a particular suffering with a specific sin, but it is true that human suffering is the mark of our estrangement from God; and in our sorrow we become aware of that gulf, and aware therefore of our desperate need for him.
