Invitatory

NJBC: enthronement psalm or prophetic liturgy

Grail: Call to praise and worship: a processional hymn. Over Israel God claimed a double kingship: she had been created and she had been chosen. Here she is invited (the psalm is called the “Invitatorium”) to celebrate both creation and choice. But she is warned, too. The flock divinely led from Egypt had disputed with Moses and tested God’s patience by its complaints. It was at Raphidim in Sinai and so that place was called ‘Massah and Meribah’--‘Trial and Dispute’ (Ex 17:1-7). Now those things ‘were written for our correction’ (I Cor 10:11); we may still thwart the grace of our call--it does not inevitably blossom into the glory of final choice. But how much higher than Israel’s is our calling, and how much more sublime the election which, from our point of view, we call perseverance! Not Moses but Jesus is our leader now, and the ‘rest’ he would take us to is not Palestine but a land which the meek inherit, a rest which is the eternal sabbath of God (Heb. 4:10). Pray to hear not ‘Never shall they enter’ but ‘Come, ye blessed.’

1. Ordinary Ps 118 ---6 - community thanksgiving

NJBC: Shifts from singular to plural in strange ways; “Hosanna” = “please save us”; olive branches used in feast of Tabernacles.

Grail: Processional song of praise. “The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone.” -- so our Lord, rejected by the people and raised up by God; and the Church, made up of those whom God has raised from death to life in union with the risen Christ. The Church is the temple of God, within which each of us sings our praise of God who has so loved us.

This Jesus is the stone which, rejected by the builders, has become the chief stone supporting all the rest. (Acts 4,11)

Grail: God, shepherd and host: a psalm of confidence. The "rod of iron" of psalm 2 is now a shepherd’s crook, for God who rules us lovingly keeps us also. The trust of the psalmist is so complete that one might think the New Testament had nothing to add. But in the course of years the Shepherd-Lord took flesh and died for his sheep--thus he led the way through a dark valley to pastures beyond. We follow without fear. And if we should falter, he takes us home in his arms (Lk 15:5). To such a shepherd we sing our hymn. But if, with the psalmist, we may change our picture, he is our generous host, too. The brimming cup he offers was dearly bought: "Drink! This is my blood that shall be shed."

The Lamb will be their shepherd and will lead them to springs of living water (Rev 7).

NJBC: a Zion song; 3 themes: the Lord the renowned one (vv 2-4); the resplendent one (vv 5-7); the awesome one (vv 8-13). “shattering weapons of war” is divine warrior theme, not pacifism.

Grail: Song after victory. The immense power of God is wielded with infinite delicacy; it comes down at speed to crush everything that opposes its strength but leaves those who know their own weakness quite untouched. For these the divine omnipotence is not a terrifying thing because it fights on their side; their weakness is God’s opportunity to show strength: “My power appears to perfection where there is weakness.” (2 Cor 12:9). God never displays power to impress but always to rescue, just as the incarnate Word used his power for the sick and the hungry only because he was sorry for them, and walked on the lake only to rejoin and calm the frightened disciples. If the psalmist delights in God the Warrior we can hardly be blamed; it is only a child boasting of the Father’s strength.

They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven (Mt 24,30).

NJBC: 104,105,106 are trilogy; 104 deals with creation, other two are salvation history; vv.1-2 splendor, majesty, light are nimbus of near-eastern gods; winds - flaming fire = sirocco; cycles of year and day; v. 31 “glory” refers to magnificence of created world, the Lord’s glory made visible.

Grail: God’s boundless care for creation: a psalm of worship. Religion is not a strictly private affair between God and our souls; we are part of a world, which God also made and loves. The creation was described in the first chapter of Genesis in brief phrases; here, the same account is painted in loving detail. The psalmist speaks of the world as seen by the ancients; we can think of the world also as we know it--a much more complex world than the psalmist knew--but with the same delight and awe.

To be in Christ means being a completely new creature. Everything of the old is gone, now everything is made anew. (2 Cor 5,17)

1. Ps 110 ---7 - royal psalm

NJBC: Two oracles for the king; Mohwinckel says it is Solomanic. Most frequently quoted psalm in the NT. First oracle: the king as priest; speaker announces the word of the Lord to the king. V. 3 [“a prince from the day of your birth”] is “perhaps the most difficult and obscure verse in the entire psalter.” Second oracle: the king as victor. Last verse: unclear. Maybe reference to both Adonijah and Solomon being acclaimed as king near water sources (En rogel; Gihon - today called Job’s well).

Grail: The Messiah, king, priest, and judge. Our Lord is the Son of God, begotten from eternity. As Son, he shares God’s supreme dominion; but he exercises his power in priesthood; he does not want barren authority, but to gather all to offer joyful homage in worship.

2. Ps 115 ---6 - community thanksgiving

NJBC: [ps 114 is EP Sunday 1] joined with ps 114, form & structure are controverted; perhaps an antiphonal liturgy; vv. 4-8 reminiscent of Dt-Is. (indication of late provenance); v. 17 “down into silence” = sheol (cf. ps. 88).

Grail: Promise in gratitude to God. The Hebrew text rightly makes this psalm one with the preceding. The theme remains the same but the psalmist now considers some outward sign of gratitude. We can find nothing more noble than sacrifice; the “cup of salvation” is the wine libation that celebrates temporal deliverance. How much more excellent is our salvation and how much worthier our cup! “The chalice of benediction which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ?” (I Cor 10). How could the Old Testament hope to make the thanks rival the gift? But now “where sin abounded, grace abounds yet more” (Rom 5), and the sacrifice of the Son of God has no bounds. Through him our thanksgiving exceeds even the deliverance.
