and shout with joy to the rock who saves us.

ὅτι θεὸς μέγας κύριος, - 2

καὶ βασιλεὺς μέγας ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς θεούς· //

ὅτι ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ τὰ πέρατα τῆς γῆς, - 4

καὶ τὰ ὕψη τῶν ὀρέων αὐτοῦ εἰσιν·

ὅτι αὐτοῦ ἐστιν ἡ θάλασσα, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐποίησεν αὐτήν,

καὶ τὴν ξηρὰν αἱ χεῖρες αὐτοῦ ἔπλασαν.

 

Quoniam Deus magnus Dominus, et Rex magnus super omnes deos: - 2

et altitudines montium ipse conspicit.

Quoniam ipsius est mare, et ipse fecit illud,

The Lord is God, the mighty God,

the great king over all the gods.

He holds in his hands the depths of the earth

and the highest mountains as well.

He made the sea, it belongs to him,

the dry land, too, for it was formed by his hands.

 

A great God is the Lord, - 4

over the gods like a king.

God cradles the depths of the earth,

holds fast the mountain peaks.

God shaped the ocean and owns it,

formed the earth by hand.

δεῦτε προσκυνήσωμεν καὶ προσπέσωμεν  αὐτῷ - 2

καὶ κλαύσωμεν ἐναντίον κυρίου τοῦ ποιήσαντος ἡμᾶς· /

bending the knee before the Lord, our maker,

For he is our God and we are his people,

the flock he shepherds.

μὴ σκληρύνητε τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν ὡς ἐν τῷ παραπικρασμῷ

κατὰ τὴν ἡμέραν τοῦ πειρασμοῦ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, /

οὗ ἐπείρασαν οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν, - 2

ἐδοκίμασαν καὶ εἴδοσαν τὰ ἔργα μου.

 

Hodie, si vocem ejus audieritis, - 4

nolite obdurare corda vestra, sicut in exacerbatione secundum diem tentationis in deserto,

ubi tentaverunt me patres vestri,

probaverunt et viderunt opera mea.

 

Today, listen to the voice of the Lord:

Do not grow stubborn, as your fathers did

in the wilderness,

when at Meriba and Massah

they challenged me and provoked me,

Although they had seen all of my works.

 

Listen today to God’s voice: - 4

Harden no heart as at Meribah,

on that day in the desert at Massah.

There your people tried me,

though they had seen my work.

τεσσαράκοντα ἔτη προσώχθισα τῇ γενεᾷ ἐκείνῃ - 3

καὶ εἶπα ᾿Αεὶ πλανῶνται τῇ καρδίᾳ

καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν τὰς ὁδούς μου, /

ὡς ὤμοσα ἐν τῇ ὀργῇ μου - 2

Εἰ εἰσελεύσονται εἰς τὴν κατάπαυσίν μου.

 

Quadraginta annis proximus fui generationi huic, et dixi: - 4

Semper hi errant corde; ipsi vero non cognoverunt vias meas:

quibus juravi in ira mea:

Si introibunt in requiem meam.

 

Forty years I endured that generation.

I said, "They are a people whose hearts go astray

and they do not know my ways."

"They shall not enter into my rest."

Grail: Song of a happy person. We are not animals, not even simply rational animals; we are sons and daughters of God; and we learn in prayer to look at the world as God sees it. We are joined to Christ as branches to the vine, and we try to make our minds, and our lives, grow more like his.

Grail: Human beings, the ambassadors of God. NJBC: tells the story of Israel from the exodus to the early monarchy, but with rejection of the northern kingdom in mind (and choice of southern kingdom, symbolized by David); references to plagues of Egypt and capture of Ark.

 

Grail: God’s patience and our ingratitude: the lesson of past history.  The four-beat rhythm of Israel's history: divine generosity, human ingratitude, correction, renewed generosity, is an enlarged picture of individual experience. God rarely behaves in such a way that we are forced to recognize God's hand in the events of history; this needs a thoughtful and grateful heart. And even then we easily forget. In the past God's people had found themselves threatened first by the sea, then by the desert. Flood and drought, too much and too little, luxury and penury, have always been the enemies of the people of God: "Give me neither poverty nor riches: give me only the food I need" is the sober prayer of the Book of Proverbs. But when God rescues from the two extremes there are still the dangers of mediocrity. We can soon forget the urgent prayers in past crisis and the way God heard them: but every day must be seen as a crisis in which God intervenes: "Give us this day our daily bread."

 

These events are recalled as a warning to us. (I Cor 10,6)

NJBC: "dilatasti" - narrowness = "being in a tight space"; ref to God's smiling face

 

Grail: To forget to thank may be bad, but to refuse to ask is a thousand times worse, indeed fatal, and this psalmist has learnt from experience. The psalmist's peace is lasting and satisfying. Few understand this: the celebrations of harvest-time seem to content them. There is no harm in these things--they are the gifts of God and we enjoy them gratefully: our mistake is in thinking they can satisfy. To be at peace with God is to be at peace with oneself.
