The Lord is God, the mighty God,

the great king over all the gods.

He holds in his hands the depths of the earth

He made the sea, it belongs to him,

Morning Prayer

1. ps 84 ----2 - Lord's Zion kingship

NJBC: song of Zion, like ps 46; longing for temple, happiness of the pilgrim, prayer for the king; “happy” occurs in vv 5,6,13.

Grail: Love and longing for God’s temple. The home of God on earth! What can this mean? There can be no change in God; God cannot move into a new house. No, the change is in human things. God is everywhere already but consecrates certain places where we can meet God and feel God’s presence more intimately. There is a power there without which not a sparrow falls to the ground, but also a peace that encourages the sparrow to build its nest. Such a home of God stood on the hill of Zion--a weary climb for pilgrims at the end of their journey, but strengthening them when they paused to raise their eyes. But the end of every pilgrimage lies further off, and it is a very weary climb for some, weary for all. Our city is heaven, but in a sense it is here too: “You have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the Living God” (Heb. 12:22), because the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us; in a new sense the earth is the Lord’s.

Here we do not have a lasting city; we seek a home that is yet to come. (Heb 13,14)

NJBC: praising God despite present distress; ref. to both youth and old age; v.7: psalmist has become something to be avoided like the plague

Grail: Prayer in old age. Old people look back on their lives; they were taught at their mother’s knee to put their trust in God always, and they have not forgotten (vv. 6,17); but has God forgotten them? Their enemies say “yes”; they know better. And yet they are anxious; even a short life has its crises and they have lived a long time, and God seems very far away. Though the psalmist uses the conventional language so familiar to us from other psalms, this does not conceal very real distress, and we can imagine here the situation of Job himself. One learns with age how powerfully the resilience of youth contributed even to religious optimism; God slowly and gently teaches us to do without it, and this unconscious young confidence in ourselves having done its work is now removed. If old age wishes it, God is closer than ever; the trust is purified.

NJBC: covenant-renewal circle, close to prophets; indictment of Israel for not observing the covenant

Grail: God’s judgment on formalism. Lip-service is not enough, nor is outward ritual observance. The announcement is introduced with solemnity; the poetic device in which God appears as the lord of nature. With great candor the psalmist presents God as condemning the people--not for offering sacrifice, though God has no need of it, but for mistaking the outward form for the religion of the heart: honesty, purity, kindness. These are the true sacrifices of thanksgiving. The lesson is applicable to us all; The liturgy must have self-involvement as its purpose, and the offering we make is the offering of ourselves in union with the sacrifice of Christ. In the morning this is an offer in principle; for the rest of the day it is a confirmation of this offering in practice.

NJBC: “enthroned in heaven” - equivalent to the holy mountain where God dwells in ps. 121.

Grail: Cry for help: a pilgrimage song. The exile returned from Babylon to a ruined city and a neglected land. Hostile colonists mocked their efforts to rebuild (Neh 2:19). This short hymn expresses the trust that upheld this “remnant of Israel.” The mute appeal of the “eyes” marks the simplicity of the psalm. It is so simple, indeed, that it would scarcely seem to need adapting to the true Christian heart. Yet here, as everywhere, the Incarnation has worked its miracle. For the psalmist the Lord is lord, but the Son has made us free (Jn 8:36) and St. Paul joyfully cries: “No more a slave but a child!” (Gal 4:7). The eyes that we turn to God are the eyes of a child sure that it is loved, they are not the eyes of an anxious servant. Bidding us say “Father!” our Lord would have us think of ourselves as children. Let me sing this psalm like a child.

NIGHT PRAYER

1. ps 86 ----3 - individual lament

NJBC: some think speaker is the king under attack. “humble and poor” in v 1 is common in near eastern royal inscriptions. “forgiving” in v 5 is the only time this adjective is used in OT. (επιεικης).

Grail: This is a gentle psalm, a little muted in tone without cries for help or loud shouts of anguish. There are enemies about--there always are--but God is not asked to destroy them (a refreshing change!); God is asked only to “turn and take pity” on the persecuted. The first seven verses are the perfect prayer; God could scarcely resist it; the psalmist never stops asking, and is rightly sure that such a God would never stop giving. The psalmist persuades God with a mother’s virtues too (v. 16). It is a very homely psalm.

Blessed be God, who comforts us in all our trials. (2 Cor 1,3)
