ὅτι θεὸς μέγας κύριος, - 2

καὶ βασιλεὺς μέγας ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς θεούς· //

ὅτι ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ τὰ πέρατα τῆς γῆς, - 4

καὶ τὰ ὕψη τῶν ὀρέων αὐτοῦ εἰσιν·

ὅτι αὐτοῦ ἐστιν ἡ θάλασσα, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐποίησεν αὐτήν,

The Lord is God, the mighty God,

the great king over all the gods.

He holds in his hands the depths of the earth

and the highest mountains as well.

He made the sea, it belongs to him,

the dry land, too, for it was formed by his hands.

 

A great God is the Lord, - 4

over the gods like a king.

God cradles the depths of the earth,

holds fast the mountain peaks.

God shaped the ocean and owns it,

formed the earth by hand.

δεῦτε προσκυνήσωμεν καὶ προσπέσωμεν  αὐτῷ - 2

καὶ κλαύσωμεν ἐναντίον κυρίου τοῦ ποιήσαντος ἡμᾶς· /

σήμερον, ἐὰν τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ  ἀκούσητε, - 3

μὴ σκληρύνητε τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν ὡς ἐν τῷ παραπικρασμῷ

κατὰ τὴν ἡμέραν τοῦ πειρασμοῦ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, /

οὗ ἐπείρασαν οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν, - 2

ἐδοκίμασαν καὶ εἴδοσαν τὰ ἔργα μου.

 

Hodie, si vocem ejus audieritis, - 4

nolite obdurare corda vestra, sicut in exacerbatione secundum diem tentationis in deserto,

ubi tentaverunt me patres vestri,

probaverunt et viderunt opera mea.

 

Today, listen to the voice of the Lord:

Do not grow stubborn, as your fathers did

in the wilderness,

when at Meriba and Massah

they challenged me and provoked me,

Although they had seen all of my works.

 

Listen today to God’s voice: - 4

Harden no heart as at Meribah,

on that day in the desert at Massah.

There your people tried me,

though they had seen my work.

τεσσαράκοντα ἔτη προσώχθισα τῇ γενεᾷ ἐκείνῃ - 3

καὶ εἶπα ᾿Αεὶ πλανῶνται τῇ καρδίᾳ

NJBC: dialogue between king and deity

 

Grail: A pattern for rulers. This was the prayer of the king, who was responsible for the moral welfare of his people, as well as for their material well-being. Our Lord is the king of the Christian people; no sin was found in him, and he came to make it possible for all to share his own innocence. In union with him, we declare our resolution to spread the kingdom of justice and love--in our own hearts first.

 

If you love me, keep my commandments. (Jn 14,15)

[Grail: There is no sadness in any other psalm to be compared with this, and no psalm ends on such a note. One is so used to hearing the psalmist complain about his "enemies" that when he does not, his silence is audible. There are no men complained of here--only God: but if he is an enemy, what hope is there? In this psalm there is no ray of light: it is a cry in the dark. The Dark is personified: it stands at his shoulder, and no one else stands there (v 19) except the terrors of God (v 18). The prayer of the psalmist is personified too: it knocks at God's door (v 3) but even when it gains admission it obtains no audience (vv 14-15). The inhuman enemy is sickness in a lonely old age; only God, whose messenger it is, can make the message bearable.]

ὅτι γρηγῶρωμεν συν Χριστῷ,
