The Lord is God, the mighty God,

the great king over all the gods.

He holds in his hands the depths of the earth

and the highest mountains as well.

He made the sea, it belongs to him,

the dry land, too, for it was formed by his hands.

A great God is the Lord, - 4

over the gods like a king.

God cradles the depths of the earth,

holds fast the mountain peaks.

God shaped the ocean and owns it,

formed the earth by hand.

Grail: Song of a happy person. We are not animals, not even simply rational animals; we are sons and daughters of God; and we learn in prayer to look at the world as God sees it. We are joined to Christ as branches to the vine, and we try to make our minds, and our lives, grow more like his.

Grail: Human beings, the ambassadors of God. A lyrical reflection on the making and endowment of humanity: "Let us make men and women in our own image . . . let them have dominion over the fish, the birds, the beasts" (Gen. 1:26). NJBC: Except for vv 7-8, this could be an ordinary lament.

Grail: Prayer of an exile. We are back now among emphatically personal psalms (60-63) though in this one it seems that the song is intended for the use of the king. For Israel, when it did not forget, the king was only holding the kingdom on behalf of God; two guards flanked his throne and their names were "God’s love" and "God’s protection." It must however be admitted that vv 2-6 sound like the reflections--almost mystical--of a devout Israelite and that these have been offered to the king for his own meditation. None who have any authority at all--and most have some--can afford to ignore the Rock on which they stand.

3 - Ps 64 ----3 - individual lament

NJBC: v. 4 difficult. perhaps “they string (their bows); their arrows are bitter words.”

Grail: The defeat of God’s enemies. It dismays us sometimes that the psalmist should descend from the warmth of love for God to a cold denunciation of one’s own enemies (this disappointment is felt most strongly in ps 138:19ff). We wonder how we can make the whole psalm our own. There is a real problem here which is insoluble unless we realize how God had to deal with a people who saw the world in black and white, and who did not easily distinguish the sin from the sinner. For the people of today with a little more insight into the influences suffered by the human mind, unqualified condemnation is not possible. Do not judge others or you will be judged yourselves. Consequently, the denunciation must be transposed into another key, even turned against ourselves, or rather against everything in ourselves that robs us of that thirst for God which the psalmist feels so acutely.

This psalm commemorates most particularly our Lord’s passion. (St. Augustine)

Grail: Promise in gratitude to God. The Hebrew text rightly makes this psalm one with the preceding. The theme remains the same but the psalmist now considers some outward expression of gratitude. The author can find nothing more noble than sacrifice; the “cup of salvation” is the wine-libation that celebrates temporal deliverance. How much more excellent is our salvation and how much worthier our cup! “The chalice of benediction which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ?” (I Cor 10:16) How could the Old Testament hope to make the thanks rival the gift? But now “Where sin abounded, grace abounds yet more” (Rom 5:20), and the sacrifice of the Son of God has no bounds. Through him our thanksgiving exceeds even the deliverance.

Through Christ let us offer God a continual sacrifice of praise. (Heb 13,15)

Grail: To forget to thank may be bad, but to refuse to ask is a thousand times worse, indeed fatal, and this psalmist has learnt from experience. The psalmist's peace is lasting and satisfying.
