The Lord is God, the mighty God,

the great king over all the gods.

He holds in his hands the depths of the earth

and the highest mountains as well.

He made the sea, it belongs to him,

the dry land, too, for it was formed by his hands.

A great God is the Lord, - 4

over the gods like a king.

God cradles the depths of the earth,

holds fast the mountain peaks.

God shaped the ocean and owns it,

formed the earth by hand.

Do not grow stubborn, as your fathers did

3. Ps 65 --- 6 - community thanksgiving

NJBC: prayer for rain; may be part of fall feast of Tabernacles.

Grail: Song of springtime: a psalm of worship. Learning from the Exodus, Israel knew God as savior. When she changed her way of life from that of a semi-nomadic people to that of settled agriculture, the recurrence of sowing and harvest, of early rain and summer ripening, enabled her to see God as the giver of life and creator. The vision was unclouded and immediate; no technicality of modern farming was there to blunt the edge of wonder. For Israel it was God alone who dressed the flowers. Grail: Cry for God’s help. The “name” and the “power” of God appear as synonymous in the opening verse of this psalm. The “name” of a person is the expression of individuality and the person’s peculiar possession. “May I use your name?” we say when we need access to someone. The “name” is therefore operative; it unlocks doors. In this way Israel was privileged to use the name of God either to call on God or to threaten Israel’s enemies. But now the name that Christians use is even more specific: it is a name greater than all others: Jesus; the name that gives access to God and that threatens everything hostile to our peace.

NJBC: Inclusio of “wicked” at beginning and end. 1st verse seems to be an oracle, but sin is the one speaking, to the wicked person. The supreme experience of God’s love is God’s presence in the temple.

Grail: Reflections on good and evil: an alphabetical psalm. This psalm offers a very simple solution to the problem of evil which will satisfy few today and indeed did not satisfy, for example, the inspired author of the Book of Job. Nevertheless, the act of faith that prompts it is not only touching but also, if we look far enough, fully justified. If this were not true we could not recite the psalm with conviction. But once we have enlarged the perspective beyond this present life--which the psalmist has not done--we can take the psalm to ourselves. The 'little longer' that a good person has to wait for a reward may be all the rest of her life, but this is a short time when she thinks of the life to come. Besides this perception, however, there should be another, this time not so much horizontal as vertical: underneath the denunciation of 'the wicked one' we should see the condemnation of wickedness itself, in our own selves especially. It is difficult for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. (Mt 19,23)

NJBC: wisdom psalm, text frequently obscure.

Grail: The problem of justice, pain, and death. Perhaps the light of subsequent revelation peeps through here. At first we feel that we are back in the over-simplified solution of the problem of evil in Psalm 37: the prosperity of the wicked is no difficulty because it is so shortlived. But there seems to be a sharp distinction in this psalm: wealth cannot buy everlasting life (v 10), it cannot 'ransom the soul.' But God can ransom it (v 16). This appears to be more than a confidence in recovery from sickness--of which there is no mention in the psalm. And indeed the solemn opening verses suggest a noteworthy revelation. At least we are on the threshold of the Good News of eternal life.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

has used that strength for me.

dispersit superbos mente cordis sui.

Deposuit potentes de sede

Esurientes implevit bonis - 2

et divites dimisit inanes.

3/4 He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

3/4 The mighty arm of God - 4

scatters the proud in their conceit, - 4

pulls tyrants from their thrones,

and raises up the humble.

The Lord fills the starving,

and lets the rich go hungry.

4/4 Suscepit Israel puerum suum, - 4

recordatus misericordiae suae.

Sicut locutus est ad patres nostros,

Abraham et semini ejus in saecula.

4/4 He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

4/4 God rescues lowly Israel, - 4

recalling the promise of mercy,

the promise made to our forebears,

to Abraham’s heirs forever.
