Morning Prayer

Προσευχὴ τοῦ Μωυσῆ ἀνθρώπου τοῦ θεοῦ.

Oratio Moysi, hominis Dei.

A prayer of Moses, man of God.

NJBC: national lament or meditation on human mortality; only psalm attributed to Moses; chiastic hymn with birth at the center=maternal tone; ref. to children at end recalls language of birth in v. 2

Grail: Pondering on the brevity of life. The plural pronouns no doubt indicate that this psalm was sung in community, but it surely reads like a national song and the application is surely to the congregation as individuals. The “anger” and “fury” of God (v. 11) have been used before (e.g. ps. 6:2) as a description of the brevity and pain of life. It is always difficult to know how much the Christian’s love of God owes to the revelation of a future life, but certainly we can admire those who loved God without it; as these grew older, we might have thought, their love of God would weaken in proportion since they had less to hope for. But instead it seemed to strengthen. Perhaps this is because the revelation was beginning to dawn already?

There is no time with God; a thousand years, a single day, it is all one. (2 Pet 3,8)

or the earth or the world brought forth,

καὶ τοὺς πεπεδημένους τῇ καρδίᾳ ἐν σοφίᾳ.  ◦

et præ timore tuo iram tuam dinumerare?

Dexteram tuam sic notam fac,

et eruditos corde in sapientia.  ◦

and fears the strength of your fury?

Make us know the shortness of our life

that we may gain wisdom of heart.  ◦

Teach us to make use of our days

Show pity to your servants.

In the morning fill us with your love;
