ὅτι θεὸς μέγας κύριος, - 2

καὶ βασιλεὺς μέγας ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς θεούς· //

ὅτι ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ τὰ πέρατα τῆς γῆς, - 4

καὶ τὰ ὕψη τῶν ὀρέων αὐτοῦ εἰσιν·

ὅτι αὐτοῦ ἐστιν ἡ θάλασσα, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐποίησεν αὐτήν,

καὶ τὴν ξηρὰν αἱ χεῖρες αὐτοῦ ἔπλασαν.

 

Quoniam Deus magnus Dominus, et Rex magnus super omnes deos: - 2

quia in manu ejus sunt omnes fines terrae, - 4

et altitudines montium ipse conspicit.

Quoniam ipsius est mare, et ipse fecit illud, 

et aridam fundaverunt manus ejus;

 

The Lord is God, the mighty God,

the great king over all the gods.

He holds in his hands the depths of the earth

and the highest mountains as well.

He made the sea, it belongs to him,

the dry land, too, for it was formed by his hands.

 

A great God is the Lord, - 4

over the gods like a king.

God cradles the depths of the earth,

holds fast the mountain peaks.

God shaped the ocean and owns it,

formed the earth by hand.

δεῦτε προσκυνήσωμεν καὶ προσπέσωμεν  αὐτῷ - 2

καὶ κλαύσωμεν ἐναντίον κυρίου τοῦ ποιήσαντος ἡμᾶς· //

ὅτι αὐτός ἐστιν ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν, - 3

καὶ ἡμεῖς λαὸς νομῆς αὐτοῦ

καὶ πρόβατα χειρὸς αὐτοῦ.

 

venite adoremus, et procidamus  ante Deum: - 4

ploremus coram Domino, qui fecit nos,

quia ipse est Dominus, Deus noster;

nos autem populus ejus, et oves pascuae ejus.

 

Come, then, let us bow down and worship,

bending the knee before the Lord, our maker,

For he is our God and we are his people,

the flock he shepherds.

kneel to the Lord, our maker.

This is our God, our shepherd,

we are the flock led with care.

σήμερον, ἐὰν τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ  ἀκούσητε, - 3

μὴ σκληρύνητε τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν ὡς ἐν τῷ παραπικρασμῷ

κατὰ τὴν ἡμέραν τοῦ πειρασμοῦ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, //

οὗ ἐπείρασαν οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν, - 2

ἐδοκίμασαν καὶ εἴδοσαν τὰ ἔργα μου.

 

Hodie, si vocem ejus audieritis, - 4

nolite obdurare corda vestra, sicut in exacerbatione secundum diem tentationis in deserto,

ubi tentaverunt me patres vestri,

probaverunt et viderunt opera mea.

 

Today, listen to the voice of the Lord:

Do not grow stubborn, as your fathers did

in the wilderness,

when at Meriba and Massah

they challenged me and provoked me,

Although they had seen all of my works.

 

Listen today to God’s voice: - 4

Harden no heart as at Meribah,

on that day in the desert at Massah.

There your people tried me,

though they had seen my work.

τεσσαράκοντα ἔτη προσώχθισα τῇ γενεᾷ ἐκείνῃ - 3

καὶ εἶπα ᾿Αεὶ πλανῶνται τῇ καρδίᾳ

καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν τὰς ὁδούς μου, //

ὡς ὤμοσα ἐν τῇ ὀργῇ μου - 2

Εἰ εἰσελεύσονται εἰς τὴν κατάπαυσίν μου.

 

Quadraginta annis proximus fui generationi huic, et dixi: - 4

Semper hi errant corde; ipsi vero non cognoverunt vias meas:

quibus juravi in ira mea:

Si introibunt in requiem meam.

 

Forty years I endured that generation.

I said, "They are a people whose hearts go astray

and they do not know my ways."

So I swore in my anger,

"They shall not enter into my rest."

I said, They are perverse,

Morning Prayer  

 

1.   ps 5   ---3 - individual lament       

 

NJBC: lament concerned with access to the temple; help “in the morning” occurs in several psalms

 

Grail: Morning prayer. By the grace of God every new day brings fresh hope to most of us. It would seem that the psalmist has been falsely accused of some crime, and is hoping that today at last the accuser will be exposed. In this hope the psalmist goes to the Temple to watch and wait for God to intervene. The enemies of God’s servants are God’s enemies: God will see to them. They may deceive human judges with their honeyed words but not God; God sees the bitterness and the corruption inside. Such indictments as these make us uneasy, if we are thoughtful; in them we often find a portrait of ourselves. At least this consideration is a good general approach to what we might call the "hostile" psalms.

 

Those who welcome the Word as the guest of their hearts will have abiding joy.

 

1. I lift up my heart to you, O Lord, / and you will hear my morning prayer.

       Advent before Dec 17   [3]  On that day sweet wine will flow from the mountains, / milk and honey from the hills, / Alleluia.

       Dec 26 to Epiphany   Tell us shepherds, what have you seen? / A newborniant and a choir of angels praising the Lord.

       Lent weeks 1-4  When you give alms, / do not let your right hand know what your left hand is doing.

       Lent weeks 5 & 6   Come, O Lord, do not delay; free your people from their sinfulness.

       Easter before Ascension  [4] The splendor of Christ risen from the dead / has shone on the people redeemed by his blood, / alleluia.

3.  ps 29 ---1 - hymn      

 

NJBC: thought to originally be a hymn to Baal; prob. 6th cent. because of its monotheism; “qol Yahweh” repeated seven times; “over the waters” = conquering of sea; last verse may be a later addition.

 

Grail: God’s power seen in the storm. Praise of the power of God displayed in storm. But the strength is of a hand as powerful to calm as it is to move--a strength we can trust. The psalmist sees the land shaken from end to end, from the bulk of the Lebanon range in the north to the southern wilds of Kadesh. God is not disturbed: the Lord sits as king above the storm and blesses the people with peace. "The Lord’s voice!" It speaks in nature, it spoke in Israel’s law, it spoke through the prophets, but last and most clear it spoke through the Son--this same voice, this Word, itself took flesh. At the Birth angels echoed our psalm which begins with "glory in the highest!" and ends with "peace to God's people." Jesus is at once the power and the peace of God. We sing the sacred song to the incarnate Word.

 

The Father’s voice proclaimed, “This is my beloved Son.” (Mt 3,17)

1 -  Ps 19B  (vv 8-15)   ----1 - hymn    

 

NJBC: first part of ps 19 is a creation hymn, second part is a wisdom hymn; two parts are really one psalm; “glory” is nimbus of light and storm cloud; v. 14 forms inclusio with v 8.

 

Grail: Praise of God, creator and law-giver. The abrupt change in rhythm in the middle of a psalm together with the apparent change of subject perhaps means that we have two psalms in one. Whether this is true or not, it still remains to see what the two parts have in common, and in fact, the theme of each is the word of God. There is nature’s message of God’s beauty which is no less audible for being inarticulate and then, for Israel, the message of God’s specific will which the Law contains. For both of these we must show admiration and respect. When nature seems to us harsh and law constricting, faith must carry us through; when this is the case for others, love must work in us to help or sympathise.

 

You must be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Mt 5,48)

NJBC: lament of one unjustly accused; “poetic justice” common in Near Eastern & biblical literature

 

Grail: Appeal to God’s justice. We have no difficulty with the opening of this psalm but the confident protestation of innocence that follows it is frightening; we prefer to invoke God’s mercy rather than invite strict scrutiny. But perhaps we have no cause for misgiving. A Christian may confidently boast of being "just" because the righteousness that is the property of God alone is truly and internally communicated to the Christian. In Christ himself the righteousness of God appears and becomes available to those who have access by faith and baptism to the power of Christ’s resurrection. This is the "justness" that we can boast of when we sing this psalm:  "Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord."

 

Here stands the judge, at our very door. (James 5,9)

NJBC: first of the penitential psalms; "how long" is a common refrain; "dimming of the eyes" refers to tears

 

Grail: Prayer in time of distress; first psalm of repentance. This and the "penitential" psalm 37 are very similar but here there is not the same frank confession of guilt; indeed there is no mention of it and the term "penitential," though traditional, seems scarcely to apply. The "anger" and "rage" of God, like God’s "forsaking," may be conventional metaphors for the psalmist’s suffering. At this stage of revelation there is no hope of praising God beyond the grave; the conclusion should be clear: death would deprive God of a servant. The implication is almost impertinent, that God will be the loser if the psalmist dies. May we threaten God in our private prayers? I suppose not, but some of the inspired authors come very near to it. Anyway, let us not be too scrupulous; God knows how awkward we are and that we mean well. God is a father, not a literary critic.

NJBC: pss 9-10 go together as an incomplete acrostic; thanksgiving followed by lament is unusual; “names” of the wicked in v. 6 may refer to their progeny;

 

Grail: Gratitude and appeal: an alphabetical psalm. If God can handle the stars God has no difficulty with the human enemies of the psalmist. The Israelites never doubted this but sometimes we suspect they think God too patient altogether. “Lord, are we to order fire down from heaven to burn them up?” This is the reaction of earlier days to the enemies of God; but Jesus rebukes James and John for it (Lk 9:54). Nevertheless we have to admire the confidence in the power and vigilance of God that inspires these prayers--the impatience is only the impatience of a child sure of its parent’s strength. We must wait; we may die waiting; God seems to take no notice; in ourselves and in the world around us truth and goodness always seem to be at a disadvantage; the roll of the dice is against them. But God has the last throw and faith stands by the table watching.

 

You will come again to judge the living and the dead.

2. The poor are not alone in their distress; / God is here to help them.

NJBC: a psalm of trust; “flee like a bird” is probably the demand of the wicked that the psalmist get out of the way; ends with reference to God’s face--the divine presence in the temple.

 

Grail: The security of God’s friends: a psalm of confidence. Another, and a picturesque, variation of the theme of trust in God. The hunters are out again, but the psalmist is already away to the refuge known so well, every cranny of it, the mountain which is God. What else can one do when all the rest has collapsed that seemed dependable? Perhaps the attitude is as grudging as Peter’s “to whom shall we go?”, or as the prodigal’s mean motive for a return to his father, or as that of Israel, the ungrateful wife in Ezekiel who goes back to her husband because her lovers do not want her any more. Doubtless our own motives are never unmixed; something created has disappointed us and we turn to the Creator. Strangely enough God seems to be satisfied with this; God runs to us, undignified like the prodigal’s father. Shall we ever understand how humble God’s love is? Even the form of a servant was not enough unless it hung on a cross.

 

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied. (Mt 5,6)

2.  ps 15 ---9 - prophetic     

 

NJBC: an entrance liturgy; what sort of person is worthy to enter God’s presence (the mountain of Zion)?; walking without stumbling is an OT image of happiness, stumbling or falling is an image of ruin.

 

Grail: Moral code of a good person. “Who goes there?” In this psalm there is a challenge for those who would enter the presence of God. The passport is a blameless life, righteousness, sincerity. All these are interpreted and further defined in relation to one’s fellows, because the Israelite has a strong sense of community. In the final scrutiny before we enter the Presence the emphasis is of the same kind (Mt 25:31) but given an even stronger motive--the love of Christ: “As often as you did it for the least of my brothers and sisters you did it for me.” If our conscience turns to almsgiving our commonsense may object (since the wish is father to the thought) that all this is taken care of by the State. Perhaps. But there is much to do that lies outside this narrow field; there is the kindness of the tongue and practical sympathy of so many kinds.

NJBC: some think speaker is the king under attack. “humble and poor” in v 1 is common in near eastern royal inscriptions. “forgiving” in v 5 is the only time this adjective is used in OT. (επιεικης).

 

Grail: This is a gentle psalm, a little muted in tone without cries for help or loud shouts of anguish. There are enemies about--there always are--but God is not asked to destroy them (a refreshing change!); God is asked only to “turn and take pity” on the persecuted. The first seven verses are the perfect prayer; God could scarcely resist it; the psalmist never stops asking, and is rightly sure that such a God would never stop giving. The psalmist persuades God with a mother’s virtues too (v. 16). It is a very homely psalm.

 

Blessed be God, who comforts us in all our trials. (2 Cor 1,3)

       Dec 26 to Epiphany   The shepherds said to one another, / let us make our way to Bethlehem.

       Lent weeks 1-6   Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, / it remains only a single grain. / But if it dies, it produces a rich harvest.

       Easter before Ascension   Jesus stood among them and said, / Peace be with you, / alleluia.

ὅτι γρηγῶρωμεν συν Χριστῷ,

[4] Salva  nos, Domine,  vigilantes, 

 custodi  nos  dormientes;

 ut  vigilemus  cum  Christo, 

et  requiescamus  in  pace.

 

[4] Protect us, Lord, as we stay awake,

 watch over us as we sleep,

 that awake, we may keep watch with Christ,

 and asleep, rest in his peace.
