The Lord is God, the mighty God,
the great king over all the gods.
He holds in his hands the depths of the earth
and the highest mountains as well.
He made the sea, it belongs to him,
the dry land, too, for it was formed by his hands.
A great God is the Lord, - 4

κατὰ τὴν ἡμέραν τοῦ πειρασμοῦ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, /

Hodie, si vocem ejus audieritis, - 4

Grail: Worldwide call to praise God. The knowledge of God’s steadfast love for Israel must surely move hearts beyond her frontiers; the psalmist, therefore, invites all the world to join a choir of praise. This brief cry of joy rings above the Old Testament which so rarely sets the children of God’s mercy side by side with the children of the promise. For this reason the one who called himself the apostle of the Gentiles triumphantly echoes the hymn which is their charter (Rom 15:9-11) . . . the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written: “Therefore, I will praise you among the Gentiles and sing praises to your name.” And again it says: “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.” And again: “Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples praise him.” You and I sing it often in the sacramental presence of him who died “not only for the nation but to gather in one all the children of God” (Jn 11:51-52: “he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, and not only for the nation, but also to gather into one the dispersed children of God).. Grail: Praise and fear of God: an alphabetical psalm. “Look towards God and be radiant.” John Fisher recited this line when he saw that the sun shone behind the scaffold. This is a song for martyrs; the Lord sets them free from all their terrors. But it is also a psalm for the small martyrdoms of every day whether volunteered or simply accepted. One may be discouraged by one’s failure in past trials, weakness in those of the present, uncertain of one’s resistance in the future. But of course our own weapons are always rusting and loose in our hands; the bright and effective sword is in the hand of God alone. 1 - Ps. 105 ---- 8 - wisdom/historical
[In the published breviary, psalm 105 is used only during Advent, Lent, and Easter. Saturday's office of readings has psalms 131 and 132.]
NJBC: The presence of the patriarchs and Joseph [and Moses?] is unique in the psalter. The middle verse of the psalm divides it into two sections of 22 verses each, like the Hebrew alphabet (Israel entered Egypt, Joseph sojourned in the land of Ham).
Grail: God’s faithfulness to the promise: the story of Israel. We do not live in isolation from our physical environment, nor do we from our historical past, and the historical books of the Bible, like the creation, provide material for praise. We are what our past has made us. We are the people whom God has redeemed, but in redeeming us God was keeping the promise made to Abraham’s heirs forever.

2. - Ps 16 ---4 - individual thanksgiving
NJBC: v. 3 (the "holy ones") is notoriously difficult. v. 10, "Sheol" gets translated by LXX as "corruption" and is picked up twice in Acts (chs. 2 & 13) with that meaning.
Grail: True happiness. A psalm of confidence. So much lip-service is paid to the one God and so much activity to the gods we make for ourselves. Only thoughtful experience can show how hollow these are: the offerings we make them pay no return but a frenzy to offer more. But perhaps this experience is necessary for most: it may not lead to the high mysticism of the psalmist, but if we learn to turn away and look for a while towards the more lasting Good we may find it more satisfying after all: appetite may grow from what it feeds on. There is even a presentiment in this psalm that such a union with God will prove stronger than death, and in Christ it did. The risen Lord, so closely united with his Father, descended to the place of death and came out freely, ascending with his spoils. Nor can Death resist his Body which is the Church: he promised that the gates of death would not withstand it. Death, "the last enemy," is destroyed: the resurrection of our bodies is guaranteed by the resurrection of Christ.
The Father raised up Jesus, freeing him from the grip of death. (Acts 2,24)
