καὶ βασιλεὺς μέγας ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς θεούς· //

The Lord is God, the mighty God,
the great king over all the gods.
He holds in his hands the depths of the earth
and the highest mountains as well.
He made the sea, it belongs to him,
the dry land, too, for it was formed by his hands.
A great God is the Lord, - 4
over the gods like a king.
God cradles the depths of the earth,
holds fast the mountain peaks.
God shaped the ocean and owns it,
formed the earth by hand.

τεσσαράκοντα ἔτη προσώχθισα τῇ γενεᾷ ἐκείνῃ - 3

Morning Prayer
1. . ps 51 ---3 - individual lament
NJBC: v 7 is only place in pss where God “turns face away” in a positive sense; last two verses are not an addition, but probably post-exilic, looking forward to rebuilding of destroyed temple
Grail: Prayer of contrition: fourth psalm of repentance. The finest of the penitential psalms. We stand before God guilty but unafraid; indeed, we see our guilt as a title to mercy and an excuse for hope. A deep sense of sin is already a step towards the sanctity of God--it opens the door for God’s eager mercy. But our Lord takes us even further than the psalmist. He teaches us to cry not “God!” but “Father!” He bids us think of that father who ran to meet the son who had left him, the father who took the son in his arms and kissed him: “My son was lost and is found” (Lk 15:24). By so much does our trust exceed even that of the psalmist.
Your inmost being must be renewed, and you must put on the new person. (Eph 4,23)

who vent their anger against him.

Makers of idols will be shamed
and paraded in disgrace.

NJBC: climax of series of enthronement psalms (93, 95-99). two sections, each a full-fledged psalm: first exalts the Lord as God alone, second praises God’s faithful beneficence
Grail: Praise to God, creator and shepherd. The psalm bids us rejoice in God because we are utterly God’s. Its repetition is ecstatic: "God made us; we belong to God; we are God’s people." From God the relationship draws forth a steadfast love, for God cannot but love what is God’s own. From the psalmist the glad reflection provokes an outburst of gratitude. From those who know the Cross it should wring a cry of wonder that God should have bought what was already God’s own--that we should belong to God doubly. "You are bought with a great price," writes St. Paul; "not with gold or silver." Peter says "but with the precious blood of Christ" (I Cor 6:20; I Pet 1:18). This psalm was born again on Calvary. We must remember that as we sing it.

2 - Ps 26 ---3 - individual lament
NJBC: speaker is probably a priest; “in my integrity . . . in my integrity”
Grail: Prayer of a person of integrity. How can we sing this psalm? Do we really “walk in the path of perfection?” Surely the psalmist is exaggerating. Dare we challenge God’s scrutiny? Perhaps we must cheat here, and put all the verbs in the optative. After all, the psalmist asked for mercy, and must feel it needed. We certainly do. But it may be that the speaker is thinking rather of the privilege provided by God. The psalmist lives in a devout community and is privileged to stand near the altar. If so, we can sing this psalm with sincerity. Let us treat the psalm as a thanksgiving for being where we are--in the Body of Christ which we call the Church.
God chose us in Christ to be holy and sinless. (Eph 1,4)

NJBC: reference to the anointed may indicate a royal psalm; the term “divine shepherd” would therefore be appropriate.
Grail: Prayer in time of danger. That the Lord will not confuse the psalmist with wicked people seems often to be the worry of the singer--as if God might overlook the one singing. The fear is not without its pathos but we must not take the idea too seriously; the devout will use any trick to persuade God, who, we may be sure, understands these human ways. Jesus was once pleased to be defeated by the quick wit of a woman (Mt 15:26). We may notice, too, the identification of “the wicked” with such hypocrites as we are ourselves.
Father, I thank you, for you have heard my prayer. (Jn 11,41)

1 - Ps. 35 ---3 - individual lament
NJBC: could be royal, could be lament; seven petitions against the foe; asks God to “arise” because enemies also “arise.” seven more petitions later in psalm, which ends with eighth petition to join in praise of God
Grail: Appeal for vindication. The psalmists are not afraid to mix their metaphors freely, and as a result, our many-sided God appears in solid dimensions. Here God is first a soldier, then a farmer on the threshing floor (because God’s “angel” is God), then a poacher using a net that others have left; last of all and less graphically a counsel for the defense ready to cross-examine and to tear false witnesses to pieces. The witness against us is Satan (“the adversary”) as against Job; but the counsel for the defense is the Spirit (Rom 8:26). Must we fear the verdict? The arguments of the prosecuting counsel are strong, but they reckon without the mercy of the judge.
They came together . . . and laid their plans to capture Jesus by treachery and put him to death. (Mt 26,3)

Evening Prayer
1. ps 41 --- 3 - individual lament
NJBC: didactic (wisdom) section followed by lament of a sick person abandoned by friends; v. 10 quoted in Jn 13:18; “stand in God’s presence” may refer to the temple.
Grail: Prayer in sickness and betrayal. It is not uncommon to find the psalmist thanking God for recovery from illness, and with this, it seems, the psalm begins. With v. 4 we are taken back to the distress now over. In this description we find words familiar to us from St. John’s Gospel. To reconcile the Jews to the idea of a suffering Messiah the evangelists try to show from the Old Testament how suffering was after all to be expected. If the admired prophets of Israel could be persecuted and betrayed, why not the Messiah?
One of you will betray me--yes, one who eats with me. (Mk 14,18)

Grail: Boundless trust in God’s power. It always gives Israel a feeling of security that her God is lord of all the armies of heaven and of earth; the same power controls the universe and subdues hostile nations. That is why the psalmist can speak in terms of cosmic catastrophe and still be confident. In a tottering world there is one unshaken Rock, the God of Jacob. And meanwhile a life-giving stream keeps Jerusalem, the center of this disturbed world, safe and prosperous, because where God is, there is peace. One may think of the baptismal water that washes around the city we call the Church.
He shall be called Emmanuel, which means God-with-us. (Mt 1,23)

1 - Ps 88 -----3 - individual lament
Grail: Prayer in desolation. There is no sadness in any other psalm to be compared with this, and no psalm ends on such a note. One is so used to hearing the psalmist complain about "enemies" that when that does not happen, the silence is audible. There are no humans complained of here--only God: but if God is an enemy, what hope is there? In this psalm there is no ray of light: it is a cry in the dark. The Dark is personified: it stands at your shoulder, and no one else stands there (v 19) except the terrors of God (v 18). The prayer of the psalmist is personified too: it knocks at God's door (v 3) but even when it gains admission it obtains no audience (vv 14-15). The inhuman enemy is sickness in a lonely old age; only God, whose messenger it is, can make the message bearable.
This is your moment--when darkness reigns. (Lk 22,53)
