ὅτι θεὸς μέγας κύριος, - 2

καὶ βασιλεὺς μέγας ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς θεούς· //

ὅτι ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ τὰ πέρατα τῆς γῆς, - 4

The Lord is God, the mighty God,

the great king over all the gods.

He made the sea, it belongs to him,

the dry land, too, for it was formed by his hands.

 

A great God is the Lord, - 4

God shaped the ocean and owns it,

formed the earth by hand.

μὴ σκληρύνητε τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν ὡς ἐν τῷ παραπικρασμῷ

Hodie, si vocem ejus audieritis, - 4

Do not grow stubborn, as your fathers did

in the wilderness,

when at Meriba and Massah

they challenged me and provoked me,

Although they had seen all of my works.

τεσσαράκοντα ἔτη προσώχθισα τῇ γενεᾷ ἐκείνῃ - 3

καὶ εἶπα ᾿Αεὶ πλανῶνται τῇ καρδίᾳ

NJBC: v 7 is only place in pss where God “turns face away” in a positive sense; last two verses are not an addition, but probably post-exilic, looking forward to rebuilding of destroyed temple

 

Grail: Prayer of contrition: fourth psalm of repentance. The finest of the penitential psalms. We stand before God guilty but unafraid; indeed, we see our guilt as a title to mercy and an excuse for hope. A deep sense of sin is already a step towards the sanctity of God--it opens the door for God’s eager mercy. But our Lord takes us even further than the psalmist. He teaches us to cry not “God!” but “Father!” He bids us think of that father who ran to meet the son who had left him, the father who took the son in his arms and kissed him: “My son was lost and is found” (Lk 15:24). By so much does our trust exceed even that of the psalmist.

 

Your inmost being must be renewed, and you must put on the new man. (Eph 4,23-24)

NJBC: tells the story of Israel from the exodus to the early monarchy, but with rejection of the northern kingdom in mind (and choice of southern kingdom, symbolized by David); references to plagues of Egypt and capture of Ark.

 

Grail: God’s patience and our ingratitude: the lesson of past history.  The four-beat rhythm of Israel's history: divine generosity, human ingratitude, correction, renewed generosity, is an enlarged picture of individual experience. God rarely behaves in such a way that we are forced to recognize God's hand in the events of history; this needs a thoughtful and grateful heart. And even then we easily forget. In the past God's people had found themselves threatened first by the sea, then by the desert. Flood and drought, too much and too little, luxury and penury, have always been the enemies of the people of God: "Give me neither poverty nor riches: give me only the food I need" is the sober prayer of the Book of Proverbs. But when God rescues from the two extremes there are still the dangers of mediocrity. We can soon forget the urgent prayers in past crisis and the way God heard them: but every day must be seen as a crisis in which God intervenes: "Give us this day our daily bread."

and he gave them all they craved.

But before they had sated their craving,

while the food was still in their mouths,

God's anger rose against them.

He slew the strongest among them,

struck down the flower of Israel.  ◦

God satisfied their greed.

But while they gorged themselves,

cramming down their food,

God’s anger flared against them, 

destroying their sturdiest,

striking down Israel’s youth.  ◦

and their years in sudden ruin.

When he slew them then they would seek him,

return and seek him in earnest.

They would remember that God was their rock,

God the Most High their redeemer.  ◦

their years ended in terror.

As some died, others began to pray.

Repenting, they reached out, 

remembering their rock,

God Most High, their redeemer.   ◦

they lied to him with their lips.

For their hearts were not truly with him;

they were not faithful to his covenant.  ◦

Οιδὴ ψαλμοῦ τοῖς υἱοῖς Κορε· εἰς τὸ τέλος, ὑπὲρ μαελεθ τοῦ ἀποκριθῆναι· συνέσεως Αιμαν τῷ Ισραηλίτῃ.

 

Grail: Prayer in desolation. There is no sadness in any other psalm to be compared with this, and no psalm ends on such a note. One is so used to hearing the psalmist complain about "enemies" that when that does not happen, the silence is audible. There are no humans complained of here--only God: but if God is an enemy, what hope is there? In this psalm there is no ray of light: it is a cry in the dark. The Dark is personified: it stands at your shoulder, and no one else stands there (v 19) except the terrors of God (v 18). The prayer of the psalmist is personified too: it knocks at God's door (v 3) but even when it gains admission it obtains no audience (vv 14-15). The inhuman enemy is sickness in a lonely old age; only God, whose messenger it is, can make the message bearable.
