Grail: Processional song of praise. “The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone.” -- so our Lord, rejected by the people and raised up by God; and the Church, made up of those whom God has raised from death to life in union with the risen Christ. The Church is the temple of God, within which each of us sings our praise of God who has so loved us.

 

This Jesus is the stone which, rejected by the builders, has become the chief stone supporting all the rest. (Acts 4,11)

NJBC: prob. royal psalm re-interpreted after exile; shepherd and banquet host are closely related; v 7: “dwell” can also be “return” - ambivalence may be deliberate

 

Grail: God, shepherd and host: a psalm of confidence. The "rod of iron" of psalm 2 is now a shepherd’s crook, for God who rules us lovingly keeps us also. The trust of the psalmist is so complete that one might think the New Testament had nothing to add. But in the course of years the Shepherd-Lord took flesh and died for his sheep--thus he led the way through a dark valley to pastures beyond. We follow without fear. And if we should falter, he takes us home in his arms (Lk 15:5). To such a shepherd we sing our hymn. But if, with the psalmist, we may change our picture, he is our generous host, too. The brimming cup he offers was dearly bought: "Drink! This is my blood that shall be shed."

 

The Lamb will be their shepherd and will lead them to springs of living water (Rev 7).

2.    Ps 76      -----2 - Lord's Zion kingship     [2]

 

NJBC: a Zion song; 3 themes: the Lord the renowned one (vv 2-4); the resplendent one (vv 5-7); the awesome one (vv 8-13). “shattering weapons of war” is divine warrior theme, not pacifism.

 

Grail: Song after victory. The immense power of God is wielded with infinite delicacy; it comes down at speed to crush everything that opposes its strength but leaves those who know their own weakness quite untouched. For these the divine omnipotence is not a terrifying thing because it fights on their side; their weakness is God’s opportunity to show strength: “My power appears to perfection where there is weakness” (2 Cor 12:9). God never displays power to impress but always to rescue, just as the incarnate Word used his power for the sick and the hungry only because he was sorry for them, and walked on the lake only to rejoin and calm the frightened disciples. If the psalmist delights in God the Warrior we can hardly be blamed; it is only a child boasting of the Father’s strength.

They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven (Mt 24,30).

NJBC: vv 1-2 Lord creator; 3-6 entrance liturgy; 7-10 return of victor; “seas and rivers” recall Canaanite mythology; Canaan myth has gods bowing heads in terror until victor returns--gods are replaced by gates

 

Grail: The ruler of the universe enters the chosen dwelling place. “Heaven cannot contain thee” said Solomon, “how much less this house that I have built!” (2 Chron 6:18). And yet the King of Glory passed through the gates of a Temple where Israel’s pilgrims “sought God’s face.” This psalm shares the astonishment of Solomon: “Will God indeed dwell with humans on earth?” For us that wonder is surpassed. We have seen the Son of God pass through the gate of our nature and heard him speak “of the temple of his body” (Jn 2:21). And this is not all. Mystically assumed into that body our own selves become temples too--but we must throw open the gates of a generous heart: “When humans love me, my Father will love them and we will come to them” (Jn 14:23). We think of this as we sing: “Let him enter, the King of Glory!” “Come, Lord Jesus!” (Rev 22:20).

NJBC: Mowinckel argues for unity of this psalm; Red Sea and Jordan are merism—first and last events;

 

Grail: A people’s thanksgiving. The “we” of vv. 2-12 changes abruptly to “I” in v. 13. If this is not a combination of two independent psalms we must assume that a leader (the king?) is speaking for the people or that some private individual has used a national prayer to introduce a private prayer. On the whole it seems better to suppose two psalms later joined by an editor. The difficulty is not so much the change of vision (the saving sense of community might account for that) as the complete change of tone from national to personal: in the first half the nation has been led through the Red Sea and across the Jordan and through subsequent trials (unspecified: v. 12 leaves a feeling of abruptness). In the second an individual has come through some personal distress with the help of God. Common to both parts is relief and joy.

NJBC: Two oracles for the king; Mohwinckel says it is Solomanic. Most frequently quoted psalm in the NT. First oracle: the king as priest;  speaker announces the word of the Lord to the king. V. 3 [“a prince from the day of your birth”] is “perhaps the most difficult and obscure verse in the entire psalter.” Second oracle: the king as victor. Last verse: unclear. Maybe reference to both Adonijah and Solomon being acclaimed as king near water sources  (En rogel; Gihon - today called Job’s well). 

 

Grail: The Messiah, king, priest, and judge. Our Lord is the Son of God, begotten from eternity. As Son, he shares God’s supreme dominion; but he exercises his power in priesthood; he does not want barren authority, but to gather all to offer joyful homage in worship.

 

Christ's reign will last until all his enemies are made subject to him (I Cor 15:25).

Grail: The devil can quote Scripture, and he quoted this (Mt. 4:6): he was shrewd enough to recognize a quality and to try to play on its defects. But this is not quite accurate, because presumption is not a defect that corresponds to trust in God: the child who leaves his mother’s hand to try his own two legs is not trusting her but himself. In any case, we must not let the devil spoil this psalm for us: for many people it is the most consoling in the psalter, and small wonder.
