and shout with joy to the rock who saves us.

καὶ βασιλεὺς μέγας ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς θεούς· //

ὅτι ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ τὰ πέρατα τῆς γῆς, - 4

καὶ τὰ ὕψη τῶν ὀρέων αὐτοῦ εἰσιν·

ὅτι αὐτοῦ ἐστιν ἡ θάλασσα, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐποίησεν αὐτήν,

καὶ τὴν ξηρὰν αἱ χεῖρες αὐτοῦ ἔπλασαν.

 

Quoniam Deus magnus Dominus, et Rex magnus super omnes deos: - 2

et altitudines montium ipse conspicit.

The Lord is God, the mighty God,

the great king over all the gods.

He holds in his hands the depths of the earth

and the highest mountains as well.

He made the sea, it belongs to him,

the dry land, too, for it was formed by his hands.

 

A great God is the Lord, - 4

over the gods like a king.

God cradles the depths of the earth,

holds fast the mountain peaks.

God shaped the ocean and owns it,

formed the earth by hand.

δεῦτε προσκυνήσωμεν καὶ προσπέσωμεν  αὐτῷ - 2

καὶ κλαύσωμεν ἐναντίον κυρίου τοῦ ποιήσαντος ἡμᾶς· /

μὴ σκληρύνητε τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν ὡς ἐν τῷ παραπικρασμῷ

κατὰ τὴν ἡμέραν τοῦ πειρασμοῦ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, /

οὗ ἐπείρασαν οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν, - 2

ἐδοκίμασαν καὶ εἴδοσαν τὰ ἔργα μου.

 

Hodie, si vocem ejus audieritis, - 4

nolite obdurare corda vestra, sicut in exacerbatione secundum diem tentationis in deserto,

ubi tentaverunt me patres vestri,

probaverunt et viderunt opera mea.

 

Today, listen to the voice of the Lord:

Do not grow stubborn, as your fathers did

in the wilderness,

when at Meriba and Massah

they challenged me and provoked me,

Although they had seen all of my works.

 

Listen today to God’s voice: - 4

Harden no heart as at Meribah,

on that day in the desert at Massah.

There your people tried me,

though they had seen my work.

τεσσαράκοντα ἔτη προσώχθισα τῇ γενεᾷ ἐκείνῃ - 3

καὶ εἶπα ᾿Αεὶ πλανῶνται τῇ καρδίᾳ

καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν τὰς ὁδούς μου, /

Grail: Prayer in desolation; seventh psalm of repentance  We do not always find it possible to connect a particular suffering with a specific sin, but it is true that human suffering is the mark of our estrangement from God; and in our sorrow we become aware of that gulf, and aware therefore of our desperate need for him.

 

We are not justified by observance of the Law but only through faith in Jesus Christ (Gal 2:16)

2.  Isaiah 66: 10-14a    ----9 - prophetic      [5]

 

The heavenly Jerusalem is a free woman and our mother. (Gal 4,26)

 

2. The Lord will make a river of peace / flow through Jerusalem.

        Advent [3] The Lord is here; go out to meet him, saying: / tender his birth, gracious his kingdom: / loving God, prince of peace.  

        Dec 22-23  Bless those, O Lord, who have waited for your coming; / let your prophets be proved true.

Grail: The blessings of home: a pilgrimage song. A fellow to the previous psalm, developing the idea of its second part. With sound instinct it asks God for a Jerusalem of godfearing, happy homes. Men and women have their own part in building it--our psalm complements its predecessor's emphasis on God's prevailing work. But what is Jerusalem to us? The new Jerusalem for which we pray is "the Church of the firstborn" (Heb 12:23) [No, you have approached Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and countless angels in festal gathering, and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in heaven, and God the judge of all, and the spirits of the just made perfect . . .], the heaven on earth of which every Christian is citizen (cf. Eph 2:19).[He came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near, for through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets,r with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone.] In her the promises of the Old Testament are fulfilled and its prayers made sublime; it is around "the table of the Lord" that the Spouse of Christ seats her ever-growing family. Pray God for the happiness and peace of this family.

Grail: The fate of Israel's enemies: a pilgrimage song.  A field of ripe corn, a rich harvest--this is a good picture of God's bounty to us; but the harvest is brought forth after painful plowing.

NJBC: communal lament; language of holy war--God does the fighting; why do you sleep? why do you forget?

 

Grail: God's people in time of disaster: a national lament. The problem of evil is posed here on a national plane. At this level it had been solved plausibly enough by the book of Judges: if the nation had sinned, the nation was punished. This solution had been found unsatisfactory in the case of individuals; the experience of Job and many others had disproved the necessary connection between sin and suffering. Here the solution is found surprisingly defective even for the nation at large, and the baffled psalmist can only pray. Elijah had ironically suggested to the prophets of Baal that their god might be asleep--can the Lord sleep as well? But the psalmist's language has the extravagance born of urgency, as our own might have when we think of devout Christians persecuted. It is not our business to penetrate the mystery; it is our business to pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters. Leave the rest to God.

 

We triumph over all these things through the one who has loved us. (Rom 8,37)

NJBC: V. 3 (the "holy ones") is notoriously difficult. V. 10, "Sheol" gets translated by LXX as "corruption" and is picked up twice in Acts (chs. 2 & 13) with that meaning.

 

Grail: True happiness. A psalm of confidence. So much lip-service is paid to the one God and so much activity to the gods we make for ourselves. Only thoughtful experience can show how hollow these are: the offerings we make them pay no return but a frenzy to offer more. But perhaps this experience is necessary for most: it may not lead to the high mysticism of the psalmist, but if we learn to turn away and look for a while towards the more lasting Good we may find it more satisfying after all: appetite may grow from what it feeds on. There is even a presentiment in this psalm that such a union with God will prove stronger than death, and in Christ it did. The risen Lord, so closely united with his Father, descended to the place of death and came out freely, ascending with his spoils. Nor can Death resist his Body which is the Church: he promised that the gates of death would not withstand it. Death, "the last enemy," is destroyed: the resurrection of our bodies is guaranteed by the resurrection of Christ.

 

The Father raised up Jesus, freeing him from the grip of death. (Acts 2,24)
