Morning Prayer

1. ps 63 ----3 - individual lament

This psalm is an individual lament, to be sung using tone 3. (See the section on music in the introduction.

The New Jerome Biblical Commentary was published in 1990. It is a “Catholic” commentary. I tried to digest what I considered useful ideas on each psalm from the NJBC commentary.

NJBC: "Perhaps no other psalm so vividly expresses the intimate relationship of love between God and his faithful one." v. 2 the image is spatial, 'distant from God.' v. 9: 'cling' - "The verb 'cling,' often used to denote the proper relationship with God in the deuteronomistic literature (Josh 23:8; Deut 10:20; 11:22 etc.) exresses great intimacy. (Gen 2:24; Ruth 1:14)."

I have copied the commentary on each psalm from a 1966 edition of the Grail psalms published by Collins Paperback. The Grail version uses the earlier Septuagint-based numbering of the psalms, so Psalm 63 in most translations is Psalm 62 in the Grail edition.

Grail: Longing for God. As in Psalm 61 we have unexpected references to the king at the end of a psalm that is even more mystical--perhaps the warmest and most intimate of the expressions of love for God in the entire psalter. The image of a 'dry and weary land,' which possibly suggests the superscription 'When David was in the wilderness of Judah,' is surely no more, and no less, than a description of the dreariness of a life without God. In vv. 4-9 the images accumulate: to love God is to live fully, to feast, to rest content, to be under a protecting wing, to embrace, to be embraced. Even St. John of the Cross could scarcely do better than this.

The Liturgy of the Hours precedes each psalm with a verse, almost always from scripture.

Using breviary for text. The breviary omits all the “laudate et superexaltate” phrases. I have put them back here, using the Greek text as the model.

Grail: Praise to the God of victories. We join in the song of victory, the triumph of God, the crushing of the serpent’s head; for we have our part in this victorious struggle, wearing the armour of God, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit.

My comment: The choice of this psalm for Sunday of Week 1, with the militaristic tone of its last verses, makes me suspect that the Liturgy planners were not taking the Sermon on the Mount seriously enough.

Zachary’s Canticle

Antiphons for ordinary time begin here. Special seasonal antiphons are below, after these ordinary time antiphons.

The Sunday readings at Mass recur every three years, called Year A, Year B, and Year C. Year A is 2026, 2029; Year B is 2024, 2027; Year C is 2025, 2028, etc

The official breviary has three variations for the antiphons for the weekend canticles of Mary and Zachariah; they relate to the gospel at Mass on each Sunday. The antiphon for Sunday Evening Prayer I in the official Liturgy of the Hours goes with the gospel for Year A, Zachariah’s antiphon in the official Liturgy for Sunday Morning Prayer goes with the gospel for year B, and Mary’s canticle antiphon for Sunday Evening Prayer II goes with the gospel for Year C.

In both Zachariah’s and Mary’s canticles, the ICEL translation uses the word “ancestor.” I replace it with the word “forebear,” which I think flows better. I am reluctant to replace the judgment of professional translators with my own amateur judgment. I conclude that some mysterious ICEL politics must have been behind selecting the word “ancestor.” I make a similar substitution, with the same reluctance and rationale, when I substitute the word “faithfulness”for the word “fidelity” in several of the psalms.

and to remember his holy covenant. //

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham: / - 4

to set us free from the hands of our enemies, /

free to worship him without fear, /

holy and righteous in his sight,

recalling the sacred covenant, /

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, /

to give his people knowledge of salvation /

by the forgiveness of their sins. ◦

Prophet of the Most High, /

a pathway for the Lord /

by teaching the people salvation /
