God blessed the land when our Savior came to earth. (Origen)
NJBC: six past tense verbs suggest hymn of praise
Grail: The coming age of peace and justice. "Are we to continue in sin so that grace can abound? By no means!" (Rom 6:1). This would be folly no doubt; and yet we may pray with the psalmist: You have forgiven us before, now forgive us again. It seems that in God’s goodness God has established a dangerous precedent! So much the better: a confident love pervades this psalm and we are consoled. The harsh word "justice" is the only discord, but it is a notoriously hard word to translate: it is no more opposed to "peace" than "mercy" is opposed to "faithfulness;" indeed it is very close to it even before the two "embrace." "Justice" is in effect the loving purpose of God for all humanity--in this sense Jesus "fulfills all justice." (Mt 3:15). By this "justice" everything falls happily into place. Now "peace" is "the tranquility that comes from order," and peace comes to people who are the objects of God’s goodwill (Lk 2:14), that is to say of God’s "justice." In the Christian dispensation these two have embraced indeed.

You must know that God is offering salvation to all the world. (Acts 28,28)

Grail: Harvest song. The occasion of this happy psalm is a successful harvest, but the psalmist can rise above selfish considerations. There is an astonishing universality here that reminds us of the third section of Isaiah. It is a very "ecumenical" psalm indeed. The thin coating we call the soil covers the whole earth; it binds all nations together in a common interest; from this they all get their living. But the triumph of a good harvest--or industrial prosperity--should make us think of places where the harvest fails; God is the same God there, and those people are no less God’s image. If God rules the whole world with justice, we must try to imitate God. Ecumenism and economics are sometimes the same thing.

2. Ps 74 ----5 - community lament
Do not fear those who can only kill the body. (Mt 10)
NJBC: references to destruction of temple; v. 9 “signs” refer to how long tragedy would last; vv. 12-17 piece of a creation hymn
Grail: God’s people mourn over the ruined temple: a national lament. The problem of evil again, but this time from the psalmist’s point of view--and there is no hint that the nation has deserved its punishment. What is at stake, therefore, is God’s reputation; at least this is how the psalmist cunningly puts it. The occasion of this lament could be the first truly religious persecution in history--under Antiochus Epiphanes in 168 BC--but on the whole the arguments favor the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 586. But naturally it is the ruin of the temple that the psalmist describes; it should move God to action if God’s own house has been attacked. The psalm is unhappily all too apposite at the present day; we pray for the Church of Silence.

Ascending on high he led captivity captive, and gave gifts to humanity. (Eph 4,10)
NJBC: most obscure & difficult of all the psalms; could be a catalog of first lines of many songs; probable references to Ugaritic & other mythology
Grail: The journey of God’s people: a triumphant hymn of thanks. The most picturesque--and obscure--of all the psalms. In the Roman liturgy it particularly celebrates the Ascension of Christ. And no wonder: it is a hymn fit for the climax-victory of God fighting for the people and there is a wild joy running through it. God rides on the clouds but marches across the desert too; God feeds the starving people; takes willing captives with him to the holy place on the hill; God's might is in the skies. In the same way the Son of Man whose chariot was a cloud (Dan 7:13 and Mt 26:64) went on foot through the wilderness and fed his people there (Jn 6); when he ascended he took a host of "captives" with him (Eph 4:8) and his power is felt from heaven where he sits at the Father’s right hand.
