Morning Prayer 

1.  ps 57  ---3 - individual lament        

NJBC: steadfast love and fidelity are two guardian angels sent by God; refrain (vv 6,12) focuses on God’s loftiness

Grail: In time of danger: a national lament. The vehemence of the psalmists is a constant surprise: heaven knows what some of them must have gone through. Even their joy seems to shine through tears. This individual lament followed by thanksgiving is similar in form and content to the preceding psalm, and indeed to many others. Nevertheless there is more triumphant joy in the conclusion, accompanied by an almost defiant determination: the "morning" in the psalms often stands for the dawning of new hope: the psalmist is awake, waiting for it, or rather not waiting but shouting so loud that the personified Dawn, that is relief, will have to come.

Many gave false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree. (Mk 14:56]

2. Jeremiah 31:10-14  ---9 - prophetic  

Jesus was to die . . . to gather God’s children into one fold. (Jn 11,51)

3.   ps 48  ---2 - Lord's Zion kingship        

NJBC: like ps 46, a Zion psalm. journey to the impregnable city, where the Temple and God dwell. "citadels" and "towers"

Grail: The invincible city of God. The pagans may speak of their mountain of the gods, terrifying and inaccessible, but the small hill of Zion is dignified by the presence of the one God, and it is a homely place (v. 13). For all its insignificance it can look down on every high place on earth (Psalm 68:17). There is a strong sense of national pride in this psalm, but, like the assertions of innocence in other psalms, it is softened--if not dissolved altogether--by the free acknowledgement that all comes from God. It is accompanied, too, by a full acceptance of moral responsibility: the Temple is a place to ponder God’s love for the people, but it is here also that God’s commands must be joyfully received.

The angel took me up a high mountain and showed me Jerusalem, God’s holy city. (Rev 21,10)

3. The Lord is great and worthy to be praised / in the city of our God. 

       Advent before Dec 17   A great prophet will come to Jerusalem; / of that people he will make a new creation.

       Dec 26 to Epiphany   A little child is born for us today, little yet called the mighty God.

to you, to Christ, and to the Holy Spirit.

is now, and will be forever. Amen.

3. The Lord is great and worthy to be praised / in the city of our God. 

       Advent before Dec 17   A great prophet will come to Jerusalem; / of that people he will make a new creation.

       Dec 26 to Epiphany   A little child is born for us today, little yet called the mighty God.

       Lent weeks 1-4   [3] Whoever wishes to be my disciple / must deny self, take up the cross, / and follow me.

       Lent weeks 5 & 6   The hour has come / for the Son of Man to be glorified.

       Easter before Ascension    The Lord is risen as he promised, alleluia.
