καὶ βασιλεὺς μέγας ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς θεούς·
ὅτι ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ τὰ πέρατα τῆς γῆς,
καὶ τὰ ὕψη τῶν ὀρέων αὐτοῦ εἰσιν·
ὅτι αὐτοῦ ἐστιν ἡ θάλασσα, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐποίησεν αὐτήν,
καὶ τὴν ξηρὰν αἱ χεῖρες αὐτοῦ ἔπλασαν.
Quoniam Deus magnus Dominus, et Rex magnus super omnes deos: - 2

quia in manu ejus sunt omnes fines terrae, - 4
et altitudines montium ipse conspicit.
Quoniam ipsius est mare, et ipse fecit illud,
et aridam fundaverunt manus ejus;
The Lord is God, the mighty God,
the great king over all the gods.
He holds in his hands the depths of the earth
and the highest mountains as well.
He made the sea, it belongs to him,
the dry land, too, for it was formed by his hands.
A great God is the Lord, - 4
over the gods like a king.
God cradles the depths of the earth,
holds fast the mountain peaks.
God shaped the ocean and owns it,
formed the earth by hand.

Hodie, si vocem ejus audieritis, - 4
nolite obdurare corda vestra, sicut in exacerbatione secundum diem tentationis in deserto,
ubi tentaverunt me patres vestri,
probaverunt et viderunt opera mea.
Today, listen to the voice of the Lord:
Do not grow stubborn, as your fathers did
in the wilderness,
when at Meriba and Massah
they challenged me and provoked me,
Although they had seen all of my works.
Listen today to God’s voice: - 4
Harden no heart as at Meribah,
on that day in the desert at Massah.
There your people tried me,
though they had seen my work.

τεσσαράκοντα ἔτη προσώχθισα τῇ γενεᾷ ἐκείνῃ
καὶ εἶπα ᾿Αεὶ πλανῶνται τῇ καρδίᾳ
καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν τὰς ὁδούς μου,
ὡς ὤμοσα ἐν τῇ ὀργῇ μου

Morning Prayer
1. Ps 77 --- 5 - individual [community] lament
NJBC: lament (vv. 1-11); hymn (vv. 12-21); God’s “hand,” “arm,” “voice”
Grail: God’s dealings with Israel: prayer of someone perplexed. One feels that the psalmist is distressed not just for self but because of the plight of the people. When people recall the great days when the nation was brought to birth through God’s mercy and power, they wonder what can have happened to this child who seemed so promising. The psalm ends on a pathetic, nostalgic note. It does not seem that the nation has been unfaithful; otherwise the psalmist would not be so puzzled; again it is the problem of evil on a national scale; the right hand of God once outstretched now seems to have been withdrawn. There is no answer offered; the Lord has given, the Lord has taken away, that is all. This is so often the case with nations and with individuals. Blessed be the name of the Lord for what is given, even though it has been taken away.
We suffer all kinds of afflictions and yet are not overcome. (2 Cor 4,8)
1. O God, all your ways are holy; / what god can compare with our God?

Grail: Distress of someone betrayed by a friend. Distress and discouragement are as strongly marked here as in any psalm in the whole collection. It is true that there is no description of bodily suffering; the wounds of the psalmist go much deeper, and for this reason one feels that the psalm has a more general and a more profound appeal. Moreover, for all the protestations of trust in God we can sense the wavering which attacks us all. We have our Judases, we perhaps are a Judas ourselves. The apostle must have “walked in the house of God” with Jesus, and yet betrayed him. Have we? Do we?

1 - Ps 39 ---- 3 - individual lament
NJBC: has a “Joban” conclusion; recalls the silence of the suffering servant
Grail: No abiding city. It has been said that the sad lesson of the book of Ecclesiastes is “Blessed are not the rich,” and that this is at least a step towards “Blessed are the poor.” This melancholy psalm has perhaps the same virtue; it emphasizes the shortness of life and the impermanence of all that it offers. There is no hint of a life to come; revelation had a long way to go. All the psalmist could ask for would be a resigned acceptance of the human condition. And yet even this is a stepping-stone; hope is in the eternal Lord who cannot desert. The psalmist is not far from realising that death without further hope would be the desertion we cannot accept.
Creation is made subject to futility . . . by him who subjected it, but it is not without hope. (Rom 8,20)

NJBC: difficult to classify - curse in v. 7 parallels other near eastern texts - reference to "tent" refers to the Temple
Grail: The fate of the deceitful. It is rare to find a psalmist denouncing an individual, and somewhat disconcerting; for public worship it is an embarrassment. The only solution would again seem to be to sing the psalm as if it were against oneself. But perhaps it is not impious to suggest that the first part had better not be sung at all. When revelation has advanced so much that earlier attitudes become unacceptable, it might be preferable to ignore them. It is true that no word of God can be idle, but this does not mean that it speaks immediately to us. It was enough for the psalmist, necessary perhaps, to condemn the liar; we have learned to condemn only the lie.

Evening Prayer
1. Ps 62 --- 4 - individual thanksgiving
NJBC: powerful language of trust in God; obscure verses
Grail: God, the rock of strength: a psalm of confidence. The one solid foundation is God; the wise person does not build on sand or the winds and floods will bring the house down (Mt 7:24). There is no alternative (the words “alone” and “only” are repeated so often: vv. 2, 3, 6, 7, 12). This “rock” is contrasted with human help which is illusory, weightless; dictatorship, success in war, a prosperous business, all these are inadequate even when they last--which is not for long. There is an atmosphere of tranquil assurance in this psalm which we miss in many others where we meet with almost frenzied appeal. In the psalter we can usually find a prayer to suit our needs.
May God, the source of our hope, fill your hearts with peace as you believe in him. (Rom 15,13)

Grail: Harvest song. The occasion of this happy psalm is a successful harvest, but the psalmist can rise above selfish considerations. There is an astonishing universality here that reminds us of the third section of Isaiah. It is a very “ecumenical” psalm indeed. The thin coating we call the soil covers the whole earth; it binds all nations together in a common interest; from this they all get their living. But the triumph of a good harvest--or industrial prosperity--should make one think of places where the harvest fails; God is the same God there, and humans are no less God’s image. If God rules the whole world with justice, we must try to imitate God. Ecumenism and economics are sometimes the same thing.
You must know that God is offering salvation to all the world. (Acts 28,28)

Grail: Confident prayer in distress. False accusation and violence teach the psalmist that truth and peace can only be found in God. It is the situation of Jeremiah (Jer 20:7), of the author of the very similar psalm 22, and of Jesus himself, who quotes that psalm and this on the cross. There is an admission of momentary fear, a “let this cup of suffering pass me by,” but also a swift recovery; it is not perhaps the perfect designation of “Thy will be done,” but is at least a confident cry for help. This is usually as much as we can manage ourselves, and no doubt in God’s eyes it is enough. Our lives are in God’s hands, the psalmist says twice; the hands of God are sure and gentle.

NJBC: lament, trust, oracle; “depths” occurs only in four other OT texts: Is 51:10; Ex 27:34; ps 69:3,15). “let Israel wait for the Lord” occurs at end of next psalm;
Grail: Prayer of repentance and trust: sixth psalm of repentance. Waiting for the dawn of Israel’s great deliverance. The psalmist, aware of the people’s faithlessness, is equally sure of God’s answer to repentance (Neh 1:7). The return from exile was not yet “full redemption;” Israel waited and prayed. She was still waiting when Simeon took a child in his arms and said: “My eyes have seen thy salvation.” (Lk 2:50) He held the infant Son of Man who came to give his life for the redemption of many (Mk 10:45)--“with the Lord, fullness of redemption.” But since this has come, how can we Christians still await it? How can we sing the psalm? Because though called we are not yet chosen, though heirs, we do not yet enjoy the inheritance. Out of these depths our call must be constant and, if it is constant, it may be confident also. And there are some whose waiting is a purifying fire. This, more than any other, is their psalm.
Christ will save his people from their sins. (Mt 1,21)
