The Lord is God, the mighty God,
the great king over all the gods.
He holds in his hands the depths of the earth
and the highest mountains as well.
He made the sea, it belongs to him,
the dry land, too, for it was formed by his hands.
A great God is the Lord, - 4
over the gods like a king.
God cradles the depths of the earth,
holds fast the mountain peaks.
God shaped the ocean and owns it,
formed the earth by hand.

Morning Prayer
1. ps 51 ---3 - individual lament
NJBC: v 7 is only place in psalmswhere God “turns face away” in a positive sense; last two verses are not an addition, but probably post-exilic, looking forward to rebuilding of destroyed temple
Grail: Prayer of contrition: fourth psalm of repentance. The finest of the "penitential psalms." We stand before God guilty but unafraid; indeed, we see our guilt as a title to mercy and an excuse for hope. A deep sense of sin is already a step towards the sanctity of God--it opens the door for God’s eager mercy. But our Lord takes us even further than the psalmist. He teaches us to cry not "God!" but “Father!” He bids us think of that father who ran to meet the son who had left him, the father who took the son in his arms and kissed him: "My son was lost and is found" (Lk 15:24). By so much does our trust exceed even that of the psalmist.
Your inmost being must be renewed, and you must put on the new person. (Eph 4,23)

NJBC: the Lord laughs at the enemy
Grail: Appeal to God, the stronghold. It is possible that in this psalm, as in psalm 57, the thought is on a national plane; that the “foes” are as much a danger to the whole nation as they are to the psalmist: “Kill them lest my people be seduced.” But unlike in the previous psalm, the enemies seem to come from outside. (The “traitors” of v. 6 are paralleled with the “nations.”) We too have our enemies from outside; there are so many hostile influences in our age as in every other, pariah dogs, ready to snap. We cannot live behind closed doors but we have inside us our own immunity--or rather the immunity that comes from God to those who are aware.
These words of the Savior teach us the devotion that all should have for the Father. (Eusebius of Caesarea)

NJBC: enemy may be Edom.
Grail: After a defeat. This time it is certainly the nation that laments; the occasion might even be the fall of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. It may be that the difficult verses 8-11 which have an archaic ring have been taken over from some earlier composition; in this section we read the divine oracle given in answer to the initial appeal. David’s kingdom and sphere of influence is God’s possession; God can do what God likes with Moab, and Edom belongs to God (God has “thrown the sandal” over it (Ruth 4:7). God will guard these jealously. God’s property is safe as long as it remains true to itself.
You will suffer in the world, but have confidence: I have overcome the world. (Jn 16,33)

Grail: Acknowledgment of guilt: third psalm of repenrtance. Unlike its predecessor, this psalm needs no transference of thought. One sometimes wonders if commentators are too quick to take terms like those used here in their strictly literal sense. Is it really some specific sickness that troubles the psalmist? Or is it perhaps the graver sickness of the heart? In any case, it is the sense of sin that oppresses, the cure can only come from the Lord. The tone of distress is strongly conforting. We so often imagine that the sacred writers of Israel were innocent and saintly, but behind these words there seems to be a consciousness of serious and repeated sin. Evening Prayer II

NJBC: LXX divides it: 1-9 = ps 114, 10-19 = ps 115.
Grail: Prayer of someone saved from death. A simple prayer of thanks to God after escape from death by sickness, accident, or malice. The psalm became part of the Hallel or “Hymn of Praise” (pss 112-117) sung at the Paschal supper. Our Lord, therefore, went to death with the words on his lips “And a hymn being said, they went forth unto Mount Olivet.” But from him the words receive new life. Unlike the psalmist he does not ask to escape the snare of bodily death, but he defies and defeats it: “he could not be held by the bonds of death” (Acts 2:24). The prayer of his human soul is for the glory of his risen body. With the psalmist we may recite the prayer after sickness, but with our Lord we may use it as gratefully on our deathbed, for “the one who raised Jesus Christ from the dead will raise us up also” (Rom 8:11).

2. Ps 121 ----4 - individual thanksgiving
NJBC: mountain is dwelling place of God; reference to sunstroke.
Grail: God the protector: a pilgrimage song. Pilgrims lift their faces toward the temple on the height of Zion. It is the earthly home of the one God, tireless guardian of Israel. We too journey to “Mount Zion, the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem” with which the old Jerusalem of stone cannot compare. “We have here no lasting city; we seek the city that is to come” (Heb 13:14). And in that city there is one who prays “Now I am not in the world and these are in the world. Holy Father . . . I pray not that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from evil” (Jn 17:11,15). To that height and so to that shrine we confidently lift our eyes and sing our prayer.
Never again will they hunger and thirst, never again know scorching heat. (Rev 7,16)

1 - Ps 88 -----3 - individual lament
Grail: Prayer in desolation. There is no sadness in any other psalm to be compared with this, and no psalm ends on such a note. One is so used to hearing the psalmist complain about "enemies" that when that does not happen, the silence is audible. There are no humans complained of here--only God: but if God is an enemy, what hope is there? In this psalm there is no ray of light: it is a cry in the dark. The Dark is personified: it stands at your shoulder, and no one else stands there (v 19) except the terrors of God (v 18). The prayer of the psalmist is personified too: it knocks at God's door (v 3) but even when it gains admission it obtains no audience (vv 14-15). The inhuman enemy is sickness in a lonely old age; only God, whose messenger it is, can make the message bearable.
This is your moment--when darkness reigns. (Lk 22,53)
